This paper explains how temperature and humidity affect surface energy and water contact angle measurements, addressing common questions about measurement accuracy outside standard ambient conditions.

evaluating-the-influence-of-temperature-and-humidity-on-surface-energy-and-contact-angle-thumbnail-1While environmental conditions can influence a surface over time, the measurement itself remains a reliable reflection of the surface’s condition. In other words, WCA data reflects the surface, not simply the environment around it.

The findings show that typical variations in temperature and humidity do not represent a significant source of measurement error. Because temperature-related changes in liquid surface tension and solid surface energy tend to offset one another, contact angle measurements can be confidently performed across a broad range of real-world conditions.
